SPECIAL OLYMPICS
Earn Credits Helping the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games
The Department of Communication is offering four 1-credit videography workshops in Spring 2009. Two of the workshops are focused on shooting video of the Special Olympics and two on editing that video. You may enroll in one, two, three or all four workshops.
Students will film each competition and awards ceremony. The video will be edited and uploaded to a Web site so that family and friends who could not attend the games can watch their athlete in action via any Web connection. The workshops are a partnership with Special Olympics International, which launched this initiative at the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Shanghai, China. The Special Olympics World Winter Games in Idaho next February will be the second time this ambitious project has been undertaken. Boise State students have a unique opportunity to help the project succeed.
Previous training in videography is not required and all majors are welcome. There is an intense time commitment needed for these workshops. See detailed information at the Boise State Special Olympics Web page at www.boisestate.edu/specialolympics/workshops.shtml
For additional information on the workshops, e-mail Trevor Hall in the Department of Communication at TrevorHall@boisestate.edu.

THE ARBITER
Student Newspaper Recognized for Election Coverage
Boise State's student newspaper recently had the front page of its national presidential election paper selected to be included in a book, “President Obama: Election 2008,” being released by the Poynter Institute.
The Arbiter's page was one of only 75 front pages to be selected from newspapers worldwide, with only four of the pages selected from college newspapers. The Arbiter's page was chosen based on the quality of the student-produced illustration and overall front-page design. The other three college newspapers selected were from Bowling Green, Ball State and Yale.
The Boise State Bookstore will be contacting the publisher to order the book once it is available on Dec. 9 and will hope to have copies on their shelves soon thereafter.
DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY
Dr. Picklestein and Barbara Morgan Reach Out to Young Women
Few campus personalities are as notorious as Dr. Picklestein, the mischievous alter ego of associate chemistry professor Henry Charlier. In a tie-dyed lab coat and matching rainbow wig, Dr. Picklestein spends most of his time raising the eyebrows and awareness of young people who may not realize how cool, exciting and important science can be.
Charlier set a goal to see (and hopefully inspire) 2,000 K-12 students this year through chemistry demonstrations and classroom seminars, and he already has connected with between 600 and 800 kids. The next handful will be Treasure Valley Girl Scouts at a colorful evening show co-hosted by Barbara Morgan, a Boise State ambassador for scientific literacy and spirited advocate for educational outreach.
“It turns out that women are often underrepresented in the sciences, and I fear it is a cultural thing, even in this day and age,” Charlier said. “Our mission is to show these young women that science is for them and to stimulate their interest in science.”
The free demo show is at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, in the Student Union Bishop Barnwell Room.

On Our Campus/In Our Community
Daughter of BSU Employee Recovering
Kristy Robinson, the daughter of Dana Robinson in Printing and Graphics who
was critically injured on Sept. 7 when she was hit by a suspected drunken driver,
should be out of the hospital later this week. Dana Robinson said Kristy has completed
all of her surgeries and is making progress each day.
“She is starting to whisper and make complete sentences,” Dana said. “It is going to be a long recovery but we are happy that she will be home for Christmas.”
Dana said she and her family are thankful for the support they have received. Robinson's colleagues in Printing and Graphics established a fund at Key Bank to help defray the considerable expenses they will incur, and PieceWorks, a local quilting club that includes members of the Boise State family, made a comfort quilt for Kristy.
