Test Scoring and Survey Scanning

Details

OIT provides test scoring and survey scanning services, to instructors, researchers, and departments with several options for electronic data entry and management. Test scoring is done with an OpScan 6 scanner, and we also provide scanning for surveys and other purposes using optical character recognition (OCR) software.

Location

Scanning services are located in the Business Building, Room 112, telephone 426-4081.

Automated Test Scoring

This service is available for tests given to students at Boise State University. Anyone teaching a course at any of our campuses may use this service. We scan five- and 10-answer NCS bubble sheets.

We provide several standard reports:

Other reports are available upon request. You may also request a data file with test scores and item responses by students, which can be sent via email.

When you bring in tests to be scanned, you will need a five- or 10-answer NCS bubble sheet for each student. These must be filled out with a #2 pencil, and must have bubbled in the student’s name and if desired a student identification number. The form must be free of any extraneous marks.

The answer key must contain some identifier that it is the key, usually the words "KEY", "MASTER", or something descriptive on the top line. The instructor’s name, course number and phone number (for questions only) must be written on the top line also. The correct answers must be bubbled in. The answers must be written in pencil.

You can have different points assigned to questions, and more than one answer per question. The machine can’t choose BETWEEN two answers so if you choose more than one answer it has to be AND answers (A and C) not OR (A or C)

We make every attempt possible to have your results available within two business hours of when you bring in the test.

Instructor Evaluations

OIT also scans evaluation forms for instructors of Boise State University courses. In general, the format of evaluation forms is similar to exams: the forms must be filled out with #2 pencils and free of extraneous marks, but without a student name or identification. Again, these are scanned on the OpScan 6, which requires a five- or 10-answer NCS bubble sheets, as well as customized forms that can be developed and printed by NCS at your cost.

Also needed is a separate paper (not an NCS form) with the instructor’s name, the course, section, semester and year, and the number of questions on the evaluation to be scanned.

The standard evaluation report is a simple item analysis.

Some departments do have additional instructions for their evaluation reporting.

Please contact us at 426-4081 with questions or for more information.

Other OpScan scanning services

Another OpScan scanning service we provide is raw scanning of the bubble sheets. We send the results to the instructor via email, and they process it with whatever program they want.

Other OpScan scanning not associated with Boise State University exams and evaluations can be performed. You may purchase bubble sheets through OIT for $25 per 500 sheets ($.05 / sheet), and have them scanned for $.06 per sheet.

Survey Scanning services

We use optical character recognition software (OCR) to scan surveys or other documents into a data file. All question types can be scanned: forced choice, multiple answers, constrained print and open-ended questions can all be scanned and the data returned to the file format of your choice. These forms must be created in our software, Cardiff, and you must do your own analysis of the data. You may bring in fully designed forms or we can recommend a survey layout for you. If you bring in a designed form we still have to enter it into our software and you will be charged for that time.

For survey scanning services, we charge an hourly fee to set up the survey instrument or form, and charge by the page to scan. The per-page fee varies by the amount of open-ended, short-answer or constrained print questions on the survey or form. Turn-around time will depend on the size of the job and the timing within the semester.
