Physics Best Practices

  1. Dr. Richard Reimann – ‘Student Response Systems’

Dr. Reimann will discuss his personal experiences, both positive and negative, of implementing clickers in the classroom.

  2. Gary Hunt – ‘Gender Equity in the Physics classroom’

Mr. Hunt will discuss the pertinent research as well as talk about his experiences implementing strategies for improving gender equity.

  3. Dewey Dykstra – ‘Practicing Our Profession in the Classroom’

In physics we practice our profession by developing and testing explanatory theories for the phenomena we choose to study. Our theories enable predictions by which we can both test the theories and develop applications to make the human condition better. When we teach physics we can and should use this very successful process. Unfortunately, generally this core practice we have learned as physicists is generally not explicitly employed when we teach physics. A case will be made for a description of the implicit “theory” generally used in physics teaching and an alternative theory will be described. Results of the application of these two theories in physics classrooms will be compared.

  4. Brian Pyper – ‘Physics Demonstrations Best Practices’
