The university also is making significant research contributions in such diverse areas as high-tech economic development, environmental processes, raptor research, educational technology, foreign policy analysis, school improvement, and criminal justice issues. Excellence and innovation are the hallmarks of creative activity in music, arts, theatre and literature.

Boise State faculty conduct externally funded studies in Idaho and around the globe. Their research contributes to addressing some of the major health, environmental, technological and social issues of the day.

Many research endeavors at Boise State are interdisciplinary in nature and also involve collaborations with other universities, private industry or with public organizations. Boise State students at both the undergraduate and graduate level are integrally involved in university research, and have many opportunities to work alongside faculty on funded projects. The National Science Foundation, the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Department of Defense and the U.S Department of Education are among agencies that fund university projects.

During fiscal year 2007, Boise State received $26.8 million in sponsored project funding, a new university record and an increase of $3 million over the previous year. In total, 243 Boise State research projects received sponsored funding during FY 2007. Nearly $14.5 million of Boise State’s sponsored project research dollars came from federal grants and awards.

External funding for research and sponsored projects at Boise State has increased by 47 percent since 2000. During that same period, total awarded from funds from the NSF increased 130 percent and funding from the NIH increased 314 percent.
