Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)

What is the IACUC?

The BSU Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) is an administrative compliance committee established to oversee the university’s animal program, facilities and research projects involving the use of animals. 

BSU has determined that any activity involving animals for research, testing and/or training is subject to the authority of the PHS Animal Welfare Assurance and the Federal Animal Welfare Act and its amendments 7 U.S.C. 2131, et seq.  http://www.nal.usda.gov/awic/legislat/awa.htm.  Therefore, all faculty, staff and students at BSU must submit a protocol application for IACUC review and approval of all activities involving animal use and the procurement, handling and care of animals used in research, training or testing if:

Assurances and Registration

BSU maintains an Assurance that it will comply with the Public Health Service Policy on Humane Care and use of Laboratory Animals.  This Assurance sets forth the responsibilities and procedures of the university regarding the care and use of animals. BSU’s Animal Welfare Assurance, number A4576-01, was reviewed and approved by The Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW) and became effective on May 18, 2009.

BSU is also registered with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), registration number: 82-R-0014.

Mandatory CITI Training
As of January 1, 2012, the IACUC requires all Principal Investigators, Co-Principal Investigators and Key Personnel listed on IACUC protocol applications to successfully complete the online CITI training for animal use and care.  Contact Cal Gillis (208-426-5404) for additional information.
