CITI Training

What is CITI?

The Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) is an online training program that offers training in human subjects research protections, animal care and use, and responsible conduct of research.

Why is CITI training required?

All investigators listed on an IRB protocol application must undergo education and training on proper conduct when involved in research with human subjects.  The PI is ultimately responsible to adequately train all key personnel listed on the application in the protection of human subjects in research.  An IRB protocol application will not be approved until all investigators have completed this training.

How do I create an account?

Which training modules should I complete?

When selecting your curriculum, you will want to choose the group most appropriate to your area of research.  Choose either:

There are two additional groups titled “IRB Committee Members,” which provide training required for our IRB members only.  The other groups on this page are for animal care and use and responsible conduct of research; these are not required for IRB protocol application submissions.

The Biomedical and Social & Behavioral groups each have 16 modules and take approximately 3-4 hours to complete.

In order to successfully pass the training and receive your certification, you must have an overall score of 75% or higher on your quizzes.  You may retake these quizzes as many times as necessary to receive a passing score.

Once you have successfully passed the quizzes, your training is complete.  A copy of your training certification will automatically be emailed to the ORC.  The ORC recommends that you print a copy of this report for your records.  You also have the opportunity to complete a voluntary and anonymous satisfaction survey regarding the CITI training.

How long is my certification valid?

The CITI training is valid for three years.  After three years, you will need to complete a “refresher course” which will extend your training for an additional two years.  After the additional two years, you must retake the entire CITI training course.

If you have questions about the required CITI training, contact Amy Smith (208-426-5871).

ORC Semester Training & Education Presentations

The ORC offers a presentation on the IRB review process and how to acces the required human subjects training through CITI at the beginning of each semester.  Contact Amy Smith (208-426-5871) for more information.
