Requesting a No-cost Extension
A “no-cost extension” is the mechanism by which a principal investigator or project director obtains from the sponsor additional time to complete a project where no additional funding is required. Some auditors or program officers may interpret a request for a no-cost extension as evidence of a poorly managed project, therefore, no-cost extension requests should be carefully considered and should be rare occurrences.
In general, one or more of the following conditions should exist to make a strong argument for a no-cost extension request:
- Additional time beyond the established expiration date is required to assure adequate completion of the originally approved project;
- Continuity of grant support is required while a competing continuation application is under review;
- The extension is necessary to permit an orderly phase out of a project that will not receive continued support;
- A late start to the project due to circumstances beyond the control of the principal investigator necessitates an extended end date;
A no-cost extension is not appropriate in order to spend down remaining grant funds.
The Office of Research Administration will be happy to assist you if a no-cost extension is warranted.
