I.  OBJECTIVE

The mission of Boise State University’s Arts and Humanities Research Fellows Program is to enable research and creative activity that will inform and enrich our understanding of the humanities: the art, ideas, history, and diverse cultures of the world. The Program contributes to building an intellectual and cultural community at Boise State University, but also in Boise and beyond; encourages scholarship in the humanities; stimulates creative expression in the arts; and nurtures connections among the humanities and between the humanities and other fields of research and teaching at Boise State University.

II.  ELIGIBILITY

  1. Any tenured or tenure-track faculty member may apply.
  2. The program is open to members of any arts or humanities department (Art, English, History, Modern Languages and Literatures, Music, Philosophy, Theatre Arts) and other faculty who are engaged in humanities-related research and creative activities.
  3. Each applicant must have support of his or her Department Chair and Dean.

III.  DETAILS OF THE PROGRAM

Serving as a Fellow in the Program is a two-year commitment.
In its inaugural year, the Program will run from May 17, 2010 to May 13, 2011.  Subsequent years will follow the academic year calendar.
First-year Fellows of the Program will be provided with a variety of support for their research:

In addition to pursuing their respective research projects, first-year Fellows will be expected to make their research activities accessible to groups on campus and in the surrounding community.  The means by which this is achieved will vary according to the nature of the research project.
Examples of ways in which research activities might be made accessible include (but are not limited to) the following:

The fellowships are residential.  It is acknowledged that there may be a need for occasional travel related to the pursuit of a Fellow’s work but it is assumed that the majority of the fellowship period will be spent in residence at the University.
Second-year Fellows will serve as mentors to first-year Fellows and as ex officio members of the Fellows Steering Committee, adopting the duties and responsibilities appropriate to Steering Committee membership.  In consideration of these duties, second-year Fellows will receive a $3,000 stipend or a one-course reduction in assigned teaching workload for the academic year, as he or she chooses.

IV.  PROCEDURES

Applicants must submit an electronic copy of their proposal to Robyn Williams of the Division of Research by November 20, 2009. A completed Office of Sponsored Programs Transmittal Sheet must accompany each proposal (form found at http://www.boisestate.edu/research/research-fellows/).

A.  PROPOSALS

Proposals should not exceed four pages (single spaced, 12 pt. font), excluding CV.  Additional information that might be helpful to the Selection Committee may be included in an appendix.  Proposals must include the following:

1.  Project narrative (maximum of three pages).  In clear, non-specialist language, describe the project and how it relates to the Program’s mission and the evaluation criteria outlined below.
2.  Budget/Budget Justification (maximum of one page).  Requests for up to $15,000 to cover research expenses may be made.  Funding is intended to defray expenses related to the proposed project; it is not a stipend.
3.  Current CV for the applicant (page limitation does not apply).
4.  Three letters of recommendation that speak to the merits of the project and the ability of the applicant to complete the proposed activity (page limitation does not apply).  Note: at least one of the letters should come from an outside referee.  Please be sure to provide a list of your referees and their contact information as part of your proposal package.
5.  Endorsement of Department Chair and Dean (i.e., sign-off on the transmittal form).

B.  EVALUATION

Proposals will be evaluated by a Selection Committee comprised of individuals from both Boise State University and representatives from the local arts and humanities community.  Up to three research fellows will be awarded for the 2010-2011 academic year.
The following criteria will be used to evaluate the proposed work:

In the interest of advancing the purpose of the Program, if the Selection Committee determines that two or more proposals are equally worthy by the standards underwriting the primary criterion, the Committee may appeal to secondary considerations such as:

Awardees will be notified by the start of the Spring 2010 semester.

V.  FOLLOW-UP ACTIVITIES
Fellows must submit a one-page summary of their activities to the Division of Research within one month of completing their first year of the Program.
