ANNUAL CONFERENCE FEATURES UNDERGRAD RESEARCH
Undergraduate research took center stage at the 8th annual Undergraduate Research & Scholarship Conference, held recently in the Student Union Building on the Boise State campus.

Students majoring in fields ranging from engineering and geosciences to art, business and psychology displayed posters and discussed their research in podium presentations. The afternoon-long event provided opportunities for students to present their research in a professional setting and to network with peers, faculty and community members.
“One of the strengths of Boise State, and a source of pride for the entire campus community, is the prominent role that undergraduate students play in research,” said Mark Rudin, Vice President for Research. “Each year this conference provides these students an opportunity to share their projects and be recognized for their exceptional work.”
Dawn Mikelonis, a sophomore majoring in biology, was among students participating in a poster session in the Jordan Ballroom. “I’ve learned so much doing this research, and also preparing for this conference” said Mikelonis, who worked with biology professor Julia Oxford on a study, “Gravitational Modulation of Calcium Signaling in Bone.”
Matthew Wiggs, a senior economics major, dug through mountains of data for his research project, “Idaho Snowmelt Changes and the Impact of Non-Irrigated Crop Yields,” also featured in the poster session. Wiggs worked with geosciences professor Jen Pierce and economics professor Kelly Cobournon the project. “It taught me about persistence,” he said about conducting the studies.
Full project abstracts from the conference will be posted soon at http://scholarworks.boisestate.edu
