How Can I Get Involved?

  • Make the athletes, delegation members, and visitors to campus feel welcome. We won't all speak the same language but everyone understands a smile.
  • Attend a ceremony or competition to show your support!
  • If you are a student looking for a topic for a paper or research project, do a search on the phrase Intellectual Disability, see where it leads you and let the search spark a topic for you.
  • Attend the Special Olympics Global Youth Rally from 10 a.m.-noon Feb. 9 at Taco Bell Arena. About 3,000 young people are expected to attend the rally, with another 100,000 participating via live streaming video webcast. The Global Youth Summit Rally will unite young people with and without disabilities for an inspiring and motivational event that will provide a massive teachable moment to thousands of students around the world. The two-hour interactive show will be hosted by disabled and non-disabled celebrities and will combine exciting ways of addressing key issues of tolerance and acceptance. Learn more and register for the rally here. The Global Youth Rally is part of Project Unify.

  • Help the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games raise funds. Order a fundraising kit, sell all 250 bracelets for $2 each, send in your $500 knowing all proceeds will go directly to 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games. Each kit contains 250 cause bracelets, school awareness posters and informational handouts. (This program is being promoted in K-12 schools. Some supporting materials may be aimed at a K-12 population but all groups are welcome to join in with this fundraising effort.) To receive a kit, complete the form and fax it to the number indicated.

  • ATV Alternatives of Boise is auctioning off an orange and blue, Bronco logoed mini truck to benefit the Special Olympics 2009 World Winter Games. See their news release for a link to their site to see photos and place your bid.

  • 'Fan the Flame' Encourages Fitness
St. Luke's Regional Medical Center and Boise State are teaming up to bring the 'Fan the Flame' program to their employees. Fan the Flame is a four-week incentive program that encourages employees to increase (or maintain) physical activity while learning about the spirit of the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games. This partnership between St. Luke's and Boise State will promote friendly competition, teamwork and a healthy lifestyle, all of which are characteristics of the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games athletes. The competition begins Feb. 2. Registration now closed so if you signed up, share your newsletters with your office mates to help them learn more about the games.

  • Visit the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games website to learn more about the games and Special Olympics in general.
  • Visit the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games Education Initiative page to learn how to raise awareness in Idaho schools about persons with intellectual disabilities.
  • If you have ever attended a Special Olympics competition as an athlete, coach, volunteer, sponsor, spectator or in any other capacity, tell us your story so we can share it on our website.
