ENGL 521 Topics in On-screen Document Production
Advanced Web Page Implementation (3-0-3) (F/S). With the arrival of XML and other technologies, traditional formatting and styling of web content is becoming obsolete. This course will focus on several aspects of web page implementation: 1) using cascading style sheets (CSS) to format and style web pages; 2) chunking of web content for access by multiple devices; and 3) categorizing and ordering information on the screen. CSS level 1 and 2 specifications will be covered with emphasis on the visual formatting and positioning of information on the screen and on the layout of web pages without the use of tables. XML XLink and XPointer specifications will be studied as they relate to the chunking of information. The importance of hierarchically structuring information for use by XML and XSLT applications will also be covered. Students will design web content that conforms to these emerging technologies. The implementation of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines will also be considered PREREQ: ENGL 515 or PERM/INST.
