John Battalio

John Battalio teaches technical communication on both the graduate and undergraduate levels at Boise State. His specific areas are technical editing, onscreen documentation, writing for the computer industry, and writing in the sciences. He is interested in web development and the changes that XML will have on web management. His interest in principles of both online and hypertext applications, as well as in their usability testing, derives from his BS degree in computer science and past programming experience. He is involved in distance education via the web at Boise State.

He is also interested in the rhetoric of science. He has researched the historical and linguistic evolution of the writing of ornithologists and the interconnections between professional and popular writing in the sciences. The results of his research have appeared in The Rhetoric of Science in the Evolution of American Ornithological Discourse published by Ablex Press in late 1998. He is also the editor of Essays in the Study of Scientific Discourse: Methods, Practice, and Pedagogy (Ablex, 1998), a collection of essays on science writing for the ATTW Series in Technical Communication.

His articles have appeared in IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication, Technical Communication Quarterly, The Journal of Technical Writing and Communication, and Mississippi Outdoors magazine. He was co-editor of Hawk Migration Studies from 1988-1997.

He has also presented workshops in XML development.
