Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship
Students interested in a career in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering are invited to apply to the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program.
Established by Congress in 1986, the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation operates an educational scholarship program designed to provide opportunities for outstanding U.S. students with excellent academic records and demonstrated interest in, and potential for, careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering.
In the spring of 2008, the Foundation will award scholarships to students who will be college juniors or seniors during the 2008-2009 academic year. In order to be considered for an award, students must be nominated by their institution. Boise State University’s faculty representative is Dr. Sharon McGuire, Associate Vice President for Undergraduate Studies.
The competition for this scholarship is intense. Four-year institutions may only nominate the top 4 applicants from their university. Typically, more than 1,200 well-qualified nominees are considered for just 300 scholarships. The submission deadline for all 2008 nominations is before 11:59 p.m., central time, January 31, 2008.
Applications must be submitted online from the Foundation’s website at www.act.org/goldwater/. No paper applications will be accepted. All supporting documents must be received by February 1, 2008 at the Iowa City address. The internal deadline for submitting an application is Wednesday, January 23, 2008.
The scholarship award covers eligible expenses up to a maximum of $7,500 per year. Junior scholarship recipients can expect to receive a maximum of two years of support. Senior scholarship recipients are eligible for a maximum of one year of support.
To be eligible, a student must be a current full-time sophomore or junior and must be pursuing a baccalaureate degree, have a B average or equivalent, stand in the upper fourth of the class, and be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or U.S. national, who will pursue a career in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering.
If you meet the eligibility requirements for this scholarship and wish to apply, please go to http://www.act.org/goldwater/apply/index.html to apply online and to obtain the required forms and instructions.
