MLK & First Nations Keynote: Wilma Mankiller

Join us for First Nations Conference! Keynote Wilma Mankiller brought to you by Student Activities and the MLK Human Rights Student Committee

Wilma Mankiller, former Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, lives on the land which was allotted to her paternal grandfather, John Mankiller, just after Oklahoma became a state in 1907. Surrounded by the Cherokee Hills and the Cookson Hills, she lives in a historically rich area where a person's worth is not determined by the size of their bank account or portfolio. Her family name "Mankiller" as far as they can determine, is an old military title that was given to the person in charge of protecting the village. As the leader of the Cherokee people she represented the second largest tribe in the United States, the largest being the Dine (Navajo) Tribe. Mankiller was the first female in modern history to lead a major Native American tribe. With an enrolled population of over 140,000, and an annual budget of more than $75 million, and more than 1,200 employees spread over 7,000 square miles, her task may have been equaled to that of a chief executive officer of a major corporation.

WHEN: Friday, March 21, 2008. Doors open 7PM, Event from 7:30pm - 9:30pm

Interested in Working in the Boise State Writing Center?

Interested in Working in the Boise State Writing Center?

Being a consultant at the Writing Center is one of the most rewarding experiences available to students at Boise State. When a writer and consultant work together, both benefit and learn from the experience. It is an incredibly satisfying feeling to be part of a productive consultation. Yet being a consultant is also demanding. Good consultants are good writers, yes, but also good listeners, and they must be flexible enough to adapt to the needs of different writers and different writing situations. Of course we don’t expect everyone to be immediately ready to consult (nor do we ever envision a point where a consultant stops learning), so before anyone comes to work in the Center, he or she enrolls in the English 303 course, Theory and Practice of Tutoring Writing. This course will be offered again in Fall 2008, on Tuesday and Thursday, 9:15-10:30.

The course is open to students in any discipline, but enrollment in the course is limited. Students must fill out an application, submit a writing sample, and interview with the director of the Center and with one of the Center’s consultants before being enrolled in the course. Is this a lot to ask? Yes. But we pride ourselves on our work, and we think the rewarding experience of working with writers at Boise State is worth the effort.

If you are interested in joining us in the Center, please see our web site for more details: http://www.boisestate.edu/wcenter/consultants.html .

You can also give us a call (208) 426-1298 or stop by (LA 200)— we’ll be happy to talk with you about being a writing consultant.

Two New Powerful Research Databases @ The Library

Albertsons Library is pleased to announce an agreement with major STM publisher Elsevier to provide the Boise State University community with online access to more than 1800 of their journals.

As a result of support from the Albertsons Library and the Provost’s Office, we are signing an agreement to provide the campus with access to all titles available from 1997 to date. Elsevier’s extensive and unique full-text journal collection covers authoritative and high-impact titles from the core scientific literature. The availability of this collection will provide support for current programs and research on campus including biology, engineering, health science, nursing, geophysics, mathematics, biomolecular and biomedical science, chemistry, and musculoskeletal research.

The “ScienceDirect” package is accessible from Albertsons Library's database list (http://library.boisestate.edu/indexes), while individual titles may be accessed via our Journal Titles list ( http://journals.boisestate.edu) . Additionally, articles in Elsevier journals are now linked directly from most discipline-specific databases by using the "Find It at Boise State University” button.

The Albertsons Library has acquired another major research database: LexisNexis Academic.
LexisNexis Academic provides access to thousands of news, business, and legal sources. News coverage includes deep backfiles and up-to-the-minute stories from thousands of newspapers, wire services, websites and blogs, and broadcast transcripts from around the world. The business module features many news sources as well as dozens of key company research sources, investment and analyst reports, and accounting materials. Legal information includes comprehensive access to federal and state codes and cases, Shepard's® Citations, and hundreds of law reviews.

Albertsons Library would like to thank all those who worked to support this major step forward in supporting Boise State University’s vision as a Metropolitan Research University of Distinction.

Trip for Students Interested in Exploring Korean Culture

Are you interested in Korean culture and who would like to earn credit at the same time? Professor Stan Steiner is offering a summer course in Jeonju, Korea, this summer from June 12-29. The course will offer three units of ED-LTCY 497/597, and enrollment is open to all undergraduate and graduate students at Boise State, but is limited to the first 20 students who sign up.

The hosting institution is Chonbuk National University, which is a Korean institution located in the heart of Jeonju. Jeonju is about 2 1/2 hours south of Seoul and is an important city famous for Korean cooking, innovative festivals, historic structures, and sport activities.

This exciting course will explore the culture of Korea through interactive mini-lectures on Korean language, traditional culture and art activities hosted by Chonbuk National University, and field trips to significant historical and cultural sites. Students will meet in the mornings for their Korean culture class with Steiner and then break for lunch. After lunch, students will return to the university in order to participate in the fascinating cultural activities hosted by Chonbuk. Some of the activities will include Korean cooking, taekwondo, calligraphy, paper craft, and much more. There will be free time, so students can explore the beauty of Jeonju and the surrounding area on their own.

A special group rate is available for students who make their arrangements by the end of March. Students who participate will be traveling on a group flight from Boise to Seoul coordinated by a local travel agency. The travel agency is in charge of the booking and issuing of all student tickets.

Students will stay in dormitory rooms on campus. The cost is $1,350 for undergraduates and $1,480 for graduate students. All costs are subject to change. Additional expenses include airfare (approximately $1,550), a few meals, personal expenses and personal travel on weekends. The cost includes: tuition and fees (undergraduate or graduate credit), room and most meals, cultural activities and field trips, an international student identity card (ISIC) and local transportation and airport transportation. Students will be required to make an appointment with the travel agency booking the flight in order to pay the agency directly for their airfare.

For more information, contact Steiner at (208) 426-3952 or stansteiner@boisestate.edu
