Students Needed to Help at Primary Polls

Boise State University students have an opportunity to get paid while making a vital contribution to democracy. Ada County Elections and Boise State are teaming up to recruit, train and deploy poll workers for the May 27 Primary Election. Students working three hours on Primary Election Day morning will earn $75 and receive a T-shirt.

Workers will set up assistive voting machines (if you can read instructions, turn on and un-jam your printer, you are techie enough) in the early morning from about 6:45-10 a.m. Prior to Primary Election Day, students will need to participate in approximately one hour of training. Training sessions are currently planned on campus for April 30, May 1, May 6 and May 10.

It is also helpful for poll workers to have a valid driver's license, a car and a cell phone. Mileage is reimbursed if students use a personal car. Students who don't drive will be paired with a driver, if possible. Workers will not be responsible for hauling the voting machines; they will be at the polling station prior to set up.

To sign up, go to: http://boisestate.qualtrics.com/SE?SID=SV_2ryp5Ak373Qa76k&SVID=Prod or e-mail ppa@boisestate.edu

A few 'techies' will be needed throughout the day on May 27 as roving troubleshooters. A car and cell phone may be necessary for this position. This position will earn more and additional training will be required. Students may also sign up directly with Ada County Elections to be a 'regular' poll worker. These are the people who run the poll from 7 a.m. until after the polls close (sometimes a 14-hour day). To sign up, go to elections@adaweb.net or call (208) 287-6860.

Contact publicpolicy@boisestate.edu or call Carole Nemnich (208) 426-1835 for more information.

Health, Wellness and Counseling Services

The Art and Practice of Mindful Living
Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way on purpose, in the present moment and non-judgmentally. This kind of attention enhances greater awareness, clarity, and acceptance of present moment reality. The regular practice of mindfulness, and mindfulness meditation, provides a buffer to the negative impact of multiple stressors in our lives – plus it has been shown to enhance our immune systems and our life spans. Being fully present for the moments in our lives opens the door to the possibilities for our growth and transformation. Invest the time now in this four-week, one-credit workshop to learn how to live – really live in the moment, because the present moment is really all there is.
