Register Today for the Opt In Alert System

Could something as simple as a text message save your life?

After the campus shootings at Virginia Tech and Northern Illinois, universities and colleges nationwide have examined safety policies and raised awareness for campus security. Boise State University is no exception. The launch of an emergency notification system is the single most critical improvement campuses nationwide have added to their public safety strategies.

Boise State is implementing a new text-based, voicemail and e-mail notification system to allow the university to immediately notify you of an emergency on or near campus.

In order to get those messages, no matter where you are on or off campus, you must "Opt in" to register your personal contact information.

Opt in is the new emergency notification system that will allow Boise State to immediately notify students, faculty and staff of an emergency taking place on or near campus. Registering your personal contact information ensures you will receive details on what do to or where to go to stay safe.

Your personal contact information will never be shared or used for any other communication purposes and will only be used in the event of an emergency.

It only takes a minute, please register right away at: boisestate.edu/news/alert_opt_in.shtml.

Campus Crime Information

As we transition into the fall semester, University Security would like to remind everyone that crime on campus can and does occur. Most campus crimes can be deterred, if not entirely prevented, by developing simple tasks and habits.

While the following personal safety and theft prevention tips below cannot guarantee that you will not be a victim of crime, your chances of being victimized can be reduced.
  • Keep your personal items with you at all times or locked away. Don't leave personal items unattended.

  • Office and classroom doors should be locked when not occupied. Do not leave doors propped open.

  • Do not leave building windows open when rooms are not occupied.

  • Record the serial numbers of all computer and electronic equipment that you are issued or personally own.

  • Make sure your personal and university assets are secure and not vulnerable to theft.

  • Always lock your bike thru the wheel and frame with a high quality cable and lock.

  • Register your bike with University Security. It's easy and free.

  • Always lock your vehicle and keep valuables out of view.

  • Use a buddy system when walking to your car late at night. Utilize security escorts which are available 24/7 by calling (208) 426-1453. Always have your keys in your hand. Check under the vehicle and the back seat before you get in.

  • Know the evacuation plan for the buildings and offices you frequent.

  • Report any suspicious activities or persons. Keep emergency numbers near your phone.

  • Walk in well-lighted areas and on designated pathways.

  • If working late in a building, let someone know, and if possible, secure the doors leading to the area you are in.
If you have information about a crime that has occurred on campus but wish to report the information anonymously, call Crime Stoppers at (208) 343-2677 or 343-COPS. Your information will be taken in strictest confidence by specially-trained personnel. Tipsters that provide information that leads to an arrest or filing of charges on any serious crime may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

Please contact Campus Security at (208)426-1453 or by e-mail at bseibolt@boisestate.edu with questions or for further program information.
