O.E.L.A. encourages students to vote early. Early voting and voter registration for Ada County residents is being held at the Ada County Sheriff's Office at 7180 Barrister Dr. Boise, Idaho 83704. There are two days left before Election Day to vote early at this location! You can vote Friday, October 31 and Monday, November 3, 2008 from 8-5 P.M.

On Election Day you will have to vote at your individual precinct and you can register there the same day. Please contact the Ada County Sherriff's Office at (208) 287-6864 for more information. Get your vote in early!!!

The Provost's Excellence in Advising Award recognizes members of the university community who demonstrate excellence in advising undergraduate students. The awards are given annually to one faculty advisor in each college. University-wide awards are given to one professional advisor and one peer advisor each year, as well.

Boise State Sleep Out

Campus fundraiser to benefit persons who are homeless in Boise.

The event will take place Tuesday November 18, 9pm to 9am. Activities at the group Sleep Out Site include music, snacks and contests. Those who stay the night will receive breakfast in the morning.

Participants secure pledges from family, friends, and employees to give up their warm beds to raise awareness and money. Proceeds benefit local charity and Volunteer Services Board programming.

Boise Backyard Geology

Join the Boise State Geology Club & geologists Dr. Spencer Wood and Dr. Jen Pierce for an intriguing look into the local geologic history of the Boise area. This history includes features of the Boise River and Lake Idaho, the formation of Castle Rock and Table Rock, geothermal activity and features, the origin of the Western Snake River plain, and local volcanism and faulting.

Where: Idaho Museum of Mining and Geology/Table Rock
Cost: Suggested donations of $5 per person or $10-$15 per family, but no one is turned away for lack of funds

The Group will meet at 1pm near the Table Rock trail head in the parking lot of the Museum of Mining and Geology off of Warm Springs Road at 2455 Old Penitentiary Rd. Boise, ID 83712, phone: (208) 368-9876. The museum will be open for visitors at 12pm and the group will proceed on a leisurely hike up toward Table Rock to explore local geology.


West Campus Service Saturday

The Volunteer Services Board continues with our Service Saturday Series on November 1st.

All are welcome to join us at the West Campus for a morning of community volunteering. We are going to meet at the main building's lobby. Choose from four great projects working with local agencies that need our help. Registration and breakfast start at 10am and projects take place from 11am until 1pm.

If you would like to carpool from Boise to the West Campus, some of our staff will meet at the SUB dining stage at 8:30am. Do not be late! We will be leaving at 8:45am at the latest.

More fun and rewarding events will follow each month so pay attention to our updates. The Volunteer Services Board will continue to provide volunteering opportunities that reflect the needs of our community.

Pharmaceutical Take-Back Initiative
at the REACH Health Fair

Boise State University's Environmental Health & Safety office is partnering with the Boise Police Department to introduce a Pharmaceutical Take-Back Initiative which will allow students, faculty, staff, and the surrounding community an opportunity to bring in their unused, out of date, and unwanted medicines for collection and proper disposal by a uniformed officer.

A Boise Police officer will be accepting pharmaceutical products, both over-the-counter and prescribed, between the hours of 10am to 3pm at the Boise Police Department booth at the REACH Health Fair. They will stay in his/her custody and be disposed of by incineration or autoclaving.

Idaho Center for the Book
Trusky to Give James Castle Talk Nov. 6

Tom Trusky, English professor and author of "James Castle: His Life and Art," will screen the DVD "James Castle: Dream House" and answer questions about the artist at noon November 6th in the Bishop Barnwell Room. Attendees are welcome to bring lunch to the free presentation.

Castle was born in Garden Valley, Idaho, in 1899. He never learned to speak, had a limited ability to read and write and he seemingly refused to be taught to sign. His primary form of communication was the thousands of drawings and illustrations he produced during his lifetime.

"James Castle: Dream House" was produced by Trusky, directed by Boise State professor Peter Lutze and Rod Cashin of Academic Technologies and authored by Paul Brand of Pretty Good Productions in Coeur d'Alene. The 2nd Annual 2009 Greener Solutions Idaho State-wide Exhibition is seeking submissions that address global climate change or related environmental issues. The exhibit will be displayed in the Student Union Gallery from January 8th to February 16th.

Deadline: November 17th @ 5pm
Submit: Digital images of artwork or 35mm slides
Media: All media accepted with a maximum size of 60" x 60" x 60" and a maximum total of 3 submissions per artist

Who: Open to all Idaho residents and student artists 18 and older

Best of Show - $500 to an artist for best utilizing reused or recycled materials
2nd Place - $200
3rd Place - $150
Merit Award - $150 given to a student for best use of materials

Students enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) will not be charged this fee. SHIP will be billed. Other insurance plans may cover the vaccine (check with your plan).
*The flu clinic is offered as a community service from Health, Wellness and Counseling Services to faculty and staff. The Health & Wellness Center is limited to providing insurance and billing services for currently enrolled students. We are therefore no longer able to provide receipts to faculty and staff for the flu clinic. If you wish to have the flu shot covered by your insurance, please see a private physician.
