Boise Police Department's Volunteer Campus Corps. |
 |
In April 2009, the Boise Police Department kicked off a new program aimed at helping keep the Boise State campus a safe and pleasant place to live, study, work or visit. Called Volunteer Campus Corps (VCC), the program uses volunteers for daytime campus patrols. You’ll see the volunteers around campus and the Greenbelt on foot, bicycles and golf carts.
The mission of the VCC is to provide a positive visible presence, crime prevention and safety information, and assistance to students, faculty, campus guests and Boise police officers. The program is fashioned after a similar Greenbelt patrol also run by the Boise Police Department.
"Boise is a fantastic city who's most valuable resource is its citizens. Boise State is capitalizing on the wealth of resources our citizens represent by utilizing their time and energy toward giving back to the community," said Boise Police Lt. Doug Schoenborn. "Our volunteers come from all backgrounds, including Boise State graduates, and desire to offer their time and life experiences toward maintaining the quality of life on campus."
VCC member Doug Doehle spent 30 years in the Army, where he often mentored young soldiers and families. The VCC, he said, allows him to continue to interact with young people and be a positive influence. Another volunteer said that being involved with the VCC is about giving back to the community while helping Boise State be a safer place for students.
VCC volunteers have all passed Boise Police Department background checks and received training and orientation on campus-specific protocol. VCC members wear uniforms consisting of white polo shirts and blue vests with the Boise Police Department Volunteer logo. They also wear BPDV credentials on a neck lanyard and carry BPD radios.

GET READY! FLU/COLD SEASON IS ON ITS WAY
Follow these "Be Smart" tips:
B — Be sure to pay attention to CDC vaccination guidelines for both seasonal and H1N1 flu.
E — Eat healthy; sleep 7-8 hours; manage stress; engage in regular physical activity.
S — Stay home if you have flu or flu-like illness for at least 24 hours after you no longer have a fever (100 degrees Fahrenheit or 38 degrees Celsius), determined without the use of fever reducing medication.
M — Make sure to wash your hands with warm soapy water for 20-30 seconds or use an alcohol based hand sanitizer.
A — Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
R — Routinely clean surfaces with frequent hand contact with typically used cleaning agents.
T — Try to cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze. If a tissue is not available, use your elbow or shoulder.
POSTPONING WEDNESDAY FLU CLINICS
Due to the overwhelming campus response for the seasonal flu vaccine this fall semester and a related national shortage for additional seasonal flu vaccine (similar demand across the Treasure Valley and the country), Health, Wellness and Counseling Services is postponing the upcoming Wednesday flu clinics at the Health and Wellness Center until further notice.
We will make a subsequent announcement of rescheduled flu clinics if we are able to obtain additional vaccine and greatly appreciate your patience and understanding. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause at this time.
