For Writers

The main point to make about the Boise State Writing Center is that we are an active learning center. We believe in working collaboratively with writers, not in giving directions. Our goal, as consultants, is to prompt revision through questions and conversation, so you should expect a productive, two-way session between you and your consultant whenever you come to the Center.

Now, who are these consultants? They are, for the most part, undergraduate students who have taken a 300-level course on the theory and practice of consulting with writers. A few of our consultants are graduate students, most of whom also teach for the Boise State Writing Program. All of our consultants, though, are writers themselves, working through the same issues that you do. They know what it is like to have to brainstorm for an open-topic essay, to reorganize paragraphs and arguments, or to edit sentence structure and punctuation. And, along with that experience, they have practice in talking about the best ways to tackle those tasks. To learn a little bit more about our consultants, please follow the link. What else happens when you visit the Writing Center? Well, we have you fill out some paperwork, both before and after the session. And we. . . well, instead of listing everything that happens, it might be more helpful to give you a tour. If you'd like to follow a writer as she goes through a consultation, please take our virtual tour.

In order to try and make every session as productive as possible, we have established some guidelines for the Center. Take a moment to look through them and you should be well prepared for your visit. If you have other questions, don't hesitate to stop in, or give us a call: 426-1298.
