Best Practices
Glossary of Terms
This glossary is arranged alphabetically by title, but is not really intended to be read in full. Instead, there are links from elsewhere in the Best Practices to the relevant entry.
- Domain
- All web servers at Boise State University belong to the domain
boisestate.edu. A specific name within that space is sometimes called a subdomain and sometimes called a fully-qualified domain name. Examples: oit.boisestate.edu or www.boisestate.edu. Pretty much everything at Boise State is in that domain, whether or not they are a web server (e.g., mail.boisestate.edu). A few Boise State sites are hosted externally; for example, broncosports.com or www.bsubookstore.com and so on. - Outbound Links
- Any link that is outside the organizational unit of that website.
- Examples using the Best Practices web site
- local: /webcenter/bestpractice/resources.shtml
- outbound: http://www.bu.edu/cdaly/hyper.html
- outbound: http://hrs.boisestate.edu/training/
- outbound: /webcenter/
- The first is local because it is within this Best Practices document.
- The second is obviously outbound because it is outside the boisestate domain.
- The third is outbound because it is to another department on campus (even if the link were to web-related training)
- The fourth is marginal. If the Best Practices document were considered part of the Web Center, then it would be a local link, but if it were considered separate, then it would be an outbound link.
