Since its historic debut in 1986, Boise State University’s blue turf has become the most recognizable field in college football. Officially named Lyle Smith Field at Albertsons Stadium, “The Blue” was the first non-green artificial turf in the world.
Beyond its vibrant color, the field represents Boise State’s “blue-collar” work ethic and the innovative spirit of the Broncos. Today, the university holds a federal trademark on the color blue as applied to artificial turf, cementing this iconic field as a unique landmark for sports fans and a symbol of Idaho’s premier metropolitan research university.

History
The story began in 1986 when then-Bronco Stadium needed new synthetic turf. Then-Athletic Director Gene Bleymaier decided to go blue. The idea of a field in school colors came up during a staff meeting, Bleymaier told The Arbiter. On Sept. 13, Boise State unveiled the nation’s first non-green artificial football field.
In front of a crowd of 17,465, the Broncos defeated Cal Poly Humboldt (then known as Humboldt State) 74-0. “I like it very much. It’s innovative and very attractive,” said celebrated football coach (1947-1967) Lyle Smith of the new blue turf during the game. “Besides that, the scoreboard looks good tonight.”
Since 1986, the Bronco turf has earned nicknames: Smurf Turf, Bronco Bluegrass and Lake Lyle in honor of Coach Smith. It’s won honors, too. USA Today has named The Blue the “Best Attraction for Sports Fans” for three years running.
