Consultation Service for Academic Leaders

The Office of Academic Leadership and Faculty Affairs is piloting a program for academic leaders that brings together experts from across campus to offer guidance, facilitation, and problem-solving services through a single point of contact. The experts are drawn from Human Resource Services, the Office of the Provost, the Center for Teaching and Learning, the Dean of Students Office, the Faculty Ombuds, the Dispute Resolution Center, and many other support services. These experts work collaboratively with leaders to anticipate and respond to potential needs and challenges related to academic leadership.

It’s often not clear where leaders can go when they need advice or assistance, and we have found some duplication of effort across campus that we hope to consolidate. Consultation Services for Academic Leaders provides support for the unique challenges that leaders in academic departments, schools, and colleges encounter as they work toward “empowering members of the faculty and staff by working with them collegially to achieve common goals, build a community of scholars, and sustain a high level of morale” (the definition of academic leadership that informs the work of the Office of Academic Leadership and Faculty Affairs).

I will then follow up with you if I need more information and refer you to those with the expertise to guide you. Throughout the pilot program, the group that has designed it will solicit feedback on the effectiveness of the program and gather ideas for improving the services. The group is also developing a web portal with resources that academic leaders most often need.
