She got her start during her first year at Boise State when she joined the Dance Marathon, during which she raised $1,000 for St. Luke’s health system. Ally continued with Dance Marathon as a second-year student, raising $2,000. Seeing the happiness and joy she brought to children and St. Luke’s, she learned the importance of supporting local communities.
At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, she returned to her hometown of Vancouver, Washington, where she volunteered with Chelsea’s Closet, and dressed up like characters from the animated television program PAW Patrol, creating video bedtime stories for children at local hospitals unable to receive visitors. Ally also interned for Girls on the Run Treasure Valley, coaching girls in the third through fifth grades on their emotional and physical health. She has volunteered with Girls on the Run for two years, learning more from the girls she coaches about kindness, friendship and community.
In 2021, Ally made headlines when she created a GoFundMe crowdfunding campaign to establish a scholarship at Boise State for women in STEM, medical and legal areas of study, sending the message that women belong in those fields and should have access to their desired education and professions. In five months, Ally appeared on Good Morning America, People TV, the Lily and Harvard Business Review Ascend to promote the scholarship and speak to the importance of supporting women. To date, she has raised more than $200,000 for the scholarship, for which there is already a recipient as of April 2022.
For all four years of her time at Boise State, Ally has sat on the student conduct and appeals board at Boise State. On this board she has heard many student cases and made very difficult decisions, developing her critical thinking skills in many different areas. With this experience and the experience of founding the scholarship, she has decided to attend law school later down the road.
During her senior year, Ally tried out for the Spirit Squad, and has spent the last year giving hugs, high-fives, and chest bumps to Boise State fans at football games, basketball games, and many other events dressed as everyone’s favorite Bronco mascot, Buster.
Ally Orr is from Vancouver, Washington.
