Josue Torres-Fonseca is graduating from Boise State University loaded with honors. He came to Boise State in 2021 to continue his research into securing critical infrastructure at the SLIM Lab, where he conducts research into computers better understanding human language.
His studies have taken him to Texas State University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he researched strategies for understanding neural network learning. His research has earned him a 2022 Goldwater Scholarship, and in 2023 he received a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship.
Mentorship has played an important part in Josue’s career. He has mentored others throughout his five years at Boise State, and tutored for four different classes. He has also led the Cybersecurity and Artificial Intelligence clubs, helping foster interest in and community around these subjects during the COVID-19 pandemic.
After graduating, Josue plans to pursue a Ph.D. in computer science, and become a professor conducting research and providing mentorship.
Josue is from Boise, Idaho.

Presented by the Boise State Alumni Association and Boise State Honors College, the Top Ten Scholar Award is one of the highest academic honors granted to a Boise State University undergraduate student.
