Hien Phan

Assistant Teaching Professor, Graphic Design

Hien Phan

BFA, Middle Tennessee University
MFA/MXD, University of Florida

Hien Phan (she/her/hers) engages in design research on diversity through a wide range of design materials, transdisciplinary practices, and meaningful graphic design practices. Her research has been recognized by international design networks like AIGA, SECAC, UCDA, and HASTAC. This pursuit in design research stems from her design positionality as an international designer and researcher in multicultural institutions in the USA, including Marigold and the University of Florida, which aim for inclusivity and accessibility through brand identity and service design.  Even that means challenging design norms.

Her teaching pedagogy thus also encourages students to reflect on their unique design positionalities and to creatively communicate their worldviews through their design work. This includes interaction design with low-tech approaches, citizenship design in local spaces, package design that questions sustainability, and service design with GenAI efficiency and biases.
