ASBSU Legislative Updates: Passage of 9/11 Flag Memorial Declaration, Legislative Luncheon Bill, and Executive Code Veto

BOISE, Idaho –  During the Joint Meeting on Monday, September 8th, ASBSU passed Declaration #1: Annual Memorial for Victims of 9/11, reaffirming the student government’s commitment to honoring those who lost their lives in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Since 2022, members of ASBSU have placed 2,977 American flags in the Quad to serve as a powerful visual reminder of the lives lost that day. This declaration ensures that the tradition will continue annually, standing as both a tribute to the victims and a reminder of the sacrifices made by soldiers and veterans in the years that followed.

At the September 22nd Joint Meeting, ASBSU passed Bill #1: Legislative Luncheon, which supports the coordination of the ASBSU Legislative Luncheon. This event provides student leaders with an opportunity to directly engage with Idaho state legislators, fostering dialogue on higher education issues and strengthening the connection between Boise State students and state leadership.

In addition, Executive Code Change #1: Updates to the Executive Code was introduced and passed by the General Assembly and Academic Senate but was later vetoed by the ASBSU President. The veto was then upheld by the Joint Legislative Body during their meeting this past Monday.  This process reflects the checks and balances within ASBSU’s governing system, ensuring that all actions are made with transparency, deliberation, and the best interests of the student body in mind.

President Isaac Celedon released the following statement regarding his veto:

“I vetoed Executive Code Change #1 because while I support modernizing outdated language, several sections require greater clarity to preserve transparency and accountability. This veto allows time to refine the language so the final version strengthens our ASBSU’s governance standards. ”
