Silencing Bacteria, Amplifying Discovery: Nagarajan Lab Makes Idaho History

Nagarajan

Boise State biochemistry professor Dr. Rajesh Nagarajan and his team have made history by earning Idaho’s first-ever NIH Maximizing Investigators’ Research Award (MIRA)—a five-year, $1.7 million grant that recognizes exceptional potential for advancing scientific discovery. The Nagarajan Lab studies how bacteria communicate through chemical signals, a process known as quorum sensing, and explores ways to block these signals to “silence” harmful bacteria. Their work could lead to innovative treatments that prevent infections without driving antibiotic resistance, marking an exciting step forward for biomedical research in Idaho and beyond.
