BMOL Students Bring Microbiology to Life at Lowell Elementary STEM Night

On Thursday, November 20, BMOL students Krystal Sosa, Noah Souza, and Stephanie Rood helped introduce young scientists to the world of germs and microbiology during Lowell Elementary’s STEM Night in Boise. The event welcomed roughly 150 students and their families, with BMOL representing one of 15 participating organizations.

Hands-on activities brought microbiology to life, including growing bacteria on LB agar plates, viewing real microbes under microscopes, designing custom “microbes,” and playing microbe-themed bingo and trivia for candy prizes. A crowd favorite was a handwashing demonstration using turmeric to visualize how “germs” spread.

This outreach effort was inspired by BMOL student Haley Bridgewater, whose science communication work set the momentum in motion. We’re excited to continue building on that legacy and fostering curiosity in the next generation of scientists!
