Standard Drink Measurements

Are you pouring the correct servings?

  • 12 ounces = 1 standard drink of beer
  • 5 ounces = 1 standard drink of wine
  • 1.5 ounces = 1 standard drink of liquor

Each standard drink contains about the same amount of “pure” alcohol or Ethanol, about 1.2 tablespoons.

“Proof” means the standard strengh of alcohol

  • 200 proof = 100% alcohol = grain
  • 100 proof = 50% alcohol = whiskey, gin, vodka
  • 50 proof = 25% alcohol = brandy
  • 25 proof = 12.5% alcohol = wines
  • 12.5 proof = 6% alcohol = beer (mostly)

% of alcohol = ABV (alcohol by volume) = how much alcohol is in a given volume
