Impact Measurement

Blue Sky Institute supports ongoing efforts to measure the University’s social, environmental and economic impacts through sustainability reporting and community impact assessments completed annually at the college level. Currently, the College of Business and Economics (COBE), College of Health Sciences (COHS) and School of Public Service (SPS) are measuring and transparently reporting on their impacts.

A sustainability report:

  • Transparently reports on an organization’s financial, environmental, and social impacts
  • Ensures that the health of an organization is not only measured by standard financial criteria but by environmental and social criteria as well (also known as the “triple bottom line”)
  • Increases trust within an organization’s stakeholder group
  • Currently encompasses three colleges at Boise State University: the College of Health Sciences (COHS), the College of Business and Economics (COBE), and the School of Public Services (SPS)
  • Successful completion of our goal: reporting has now been elevated to the university-wide level and is governed by the sustainability governance council

About the Report Process

Blue Sky’s sustainability reports begin with a student-led materiality assessment with three main stakeholder groups of each College. These groups include students, faculty and staff, and external stakeholders. From there, the student reporting team finalizes its reporting topics and begins collecting and analyzing data. Students write and compile each college’s report, and findings are presented to each college’s leadership team with recommendations of improvement. Recommendations are approved and students are provided the opportunity to work with campus leadership to implement report recommendations.

Since 2014, COBE has published an annual sustainability report; and since 2016, COHS has published an annual sustainability report. SPS welcomed its inaugural report in 2018.
