COAS Advising No-Show Policy

Our advising team is committed to providing timely, personalized academic support to all students. To ensure we can serve as many students as possible, we have established the following policy regarding missed advising appointments.

What Is a No-Show?

A no-show is defined as:

  • Missing a scheduled appointment without canceling in advance. We ask that cancellation or rescheduling be done at least two hours before the appointment, but understand that this is not always possible.
  • Arriving more than 10 minutes late without prior notice, making it unlikely that the advisor can meet as planned.

Advisors may, at their discretion, still meet with a student who arrives late, but they are not obligated to do so and may instead ask the student to reschedule.

A student’s no-show count is based on consecutive missed appointments. The count will only reset once the student has completed the required steps or met the expectations outlined by COAS Advising to re-engage with our services.

No-Show Procedure

First No-Show
The student will receive a courtesy email reminding them of the importance of canceling or rescheduling in advance, along with instructions on how to book a new appointment.

Second No-Show
The student will receive the same courtesy email, reminding them of the importance of canceling or rescheduling in advance, along with instructions on how to book a new appointment.

Third No-Show
The student will receive the same courtesy email, along with a follow-up phone call from COAS Advising to help identify any barriers to attending your appointments and ensure you can successfully connect in the future.

Fourth No-Show
Any upcoming appointments will be canceled, and the Director of COAS Advising will reach out to the student. The COAS No-Show Reflection Form will need to be completed, which is designed to help identify any challenges the student may be facing in accessing advising.

Depending on the outcome, next steps may include:

  • A required meeting with the Director of Advising
  • A referral to Student Success Coaching
  • Permission to reschedule with an advisor, with a clear commitment to attending the next scheduled appointment

Canceling or Rescheduling

If you are unable to attend your appointment:

  • Please cancel or reschedule at least 2 hours in advance via the online scheduling system or by contacting our office directly.
  • Same-day cancellations are allowed, but repeated last-minute changes may be reviewed for patterns of non-attendance.
