Final ‘Idea of Nature’ Series Lecture April 23

]]Boise State will present the last lecture for the 2015 season of “Interdisciplinary Explorations – The Idea of Nature” public lecture series on April 23.

Rebecca Kneale Gould, a senior lecturer in environmental studies at Middlebury College, will speak on “The Nature of a Spacious Life” at 6 p.m. in the Student Union Simplot Ballroom. A reception with a no-host bar and appetizers will follow at 7 p.m.

Gould is co-director of the philosophy, religion and environment focus at Middlebury College where she teaches courses on religion and ecology, nature’s meanings in American culture, simplicity movements, and American religious history. Gould graduated from Harvard and Radcliffe Colleges, Emmanuel College at Cambridge University and her doctorate is from Harvard University.

Her current research involves religion and the environment, from eco-theology to studies of contemporary, religiously based environmental activism among Protestants, Catholics and Jews, with a particular emphasis on eco-Judaism.

Publications include “At Home in Nature,” about the spiritual dimensions of both modern and 19th century back-to-the land movements. She also is on the board of two national movements, Tack Back Your Time and The Simplicity Forum. She has done interviews with the Washington Post, E-Magazine and Vermont Public Radio.

Gould is a co-producer of the 2012 film “The Fire Inside: Place, Passion and the Primacy of Nature,” about people’s connections between their spiritual lives and their commitment to environmental action.

The “Interdisciplinary Explorations: The Idea of Nature” public lecture series is supported by the Idaho Humanities Council, The Osher Institute of Lifelong Learning, the College of Idaho, Boise Cascade and Packing Corporation of America, The Nature Conservancy, and the following units at Boise State: Arts and Humanities Institute, College of Arts and Sciences, College of Education, the College of Business, the College of Social Sciences and Public Affairs, Department of English, the Department of Art, the Environmental Studies Program, and the Frank Church Institute.
