English Professor Shares Project Findings at Conference

Michal Temkin Martinez delivered a colloquium talk at Florida International University the week of March 28. The talk, titled “On Integrating Experimental and Documentary Approaches to Data Collection: the Case of Somali Chizigula Prenasalization,” highlighted innovative techniques used by Temkin Martinez and her undergraduate students Haley Boone and Vanessa Rosenbaum to provide an accurate description of the current stage of the phenomenon of Prenasalization in Somali Chizigula, a language spoken by members of the Somali Bantu community who arrived in Boise as refugees.

These findings are part of a long-term documentation project in collaboration with professor emeritus Jon P. Dayley and Mwaliko Mberwa of the Somali-Bantu Zigula community. The documentation project has been supported by a fellowship from the Arts and Humanities Institute, as well as a major grant from the Idaho Humanities Council.
