Talk Addresses Value of Philosophy in the Age of Google

Portrait of Neil Sinhababu.

Philosopher Neil Sinhababu will speak on “The Value of Philosophy in the Age of Google” at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26, in Multipurpose Building Room 106. The talk is free and open to the public.

“Technology makes it easy to do complex calculations, store information and transmit this information around the world,” Sinhababu said. “While technology reduces the need for human calculation and memorization, it increases the value of developing the conceptual foundations for new knowledge, which can then be more easily discovered and transmitted. Developing these conceptual foundations often requires combining premises from different domains in reasoning, developing and clarifying concepts, and expressing complicated ideas clearly. These ideas are central to philosophy.”

Sinhababu is an associate professor of philosophy at National University of Singapore. His areas of interest include metaethics, philosophy of action and Nietzsche. His visit is sponsored by the Boise State University Philosophy Club and the Department of Philosophy. For more information, call (208) 426-3304.
