The Boise State Arts and Humanities Institute (AHI) presents “Designing for Television: An Evening with Schuyler Telleen” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 7, in the Morrison Center Recital Hall. Telleen has been a graphic designer and production designer on “Portlandia” for seven seasons. The popular television show just wrapped up its eighth and final season, which will air in 2018.
This event is free and open to the public. It is the second event in AHI’s Public Culture Initiative, which brings emerging professionals in creative fields to the Boise State campus. Crafting a creative life will be a significant theme, as School of the Arts Director Leslie Durham sits down with Telleen to discuss production design, graphics design for film and what it takes to work in the film industry in the golden age of television. An audience Q and A will follow.
While on campus, Telleen also will meet with undergraduate students from theatre arts, film production and art.
Telleen shares multiple Emmy and Art Directors Guild wins and nominations with production design team colleagues from “Portlandia.” He also has worked on the television shows “Mad Men,” “Veep,” “Parks and Recreation,” and “Captain Fantastic.” Telleen graduated with a humanities and liberal studies major and a theater minor from Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington. He also studied at the School for Film and Television in New York City before moving to Los Angeles.
AHI co-director Jacky O’Connor began the Public Culture Initiative in collaboration with Durham and faculty members from creative writing, communication and theatre arts. O’Connor says that the focus on creative intersections is central to the mission of the Arts and Humanities Institute, and the initiative “helps students to see how skills and experience cross disciplines of study and diversify career opportunities.”
The Public Culture Initiative is sponsored by the AHI, the Division of Research and Economic Development, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Narrative TV Initiative.
The Arts and Humanities Institute sustains and champions the traditional work of arts and humanities, and bridges the arts and the humanities in transformative ways by promoting creative and humanistic collaborations across all areas of inquiry. The institute’s co-directors are Jacky O’Connor, English, and Stephanie Bacon, art. During the 2017-18 academic year, Jason Herbeck, world languages, is serving as interim co-director while Bacon is on sabbatical leave.
