College of Arts and Sciences Interim Dean Marie-Anne de Graaff, with co-authors from other leading universities and research institutions, recently published a paper, “Fine root and soil carbon stocks are positively related in grasslands but not in forests,” in Communications Earth & Environment, a journal in the Nature Portfolio.
Their paper challenges the common assumption that “the more carbon a plant takes up and transfers to its roots, the more carbon is ultimately stored underground in soils.” The researchers found a strong relationship between fine root carbon and soil carbon in grasslands, but not in forests.
