Courses

Course Overview

Marketing students have the opportunity to apply their knowledge in two consecutively sequenced Advertising Agency Management classes. Each year the American Advertising Federation (AAF) sponsors a competition for schools across the nation. Students team with graphic design students to create a promotional and advertising campaign for a nationally known product the AAF has chosen. During the spring semester, students present their findings before advertising agency executives at a regional competition. One school will then advance to the national finals. Boise State teams have placed in the top three at the regional competition several times, including a first-place finish. The courses are co-led by Professor Jennie Myers and Brad Weigle.

Marketing 401

In the fall, students gather and analyze information about the client, its industry, its customers, and its competitors to develop an overall marketing communications positioning strategy. The corporate sponsor provides an assignment or case study outlining the history of its product and current advertising situation. The case study is always candid and reflects a real-world situation.

Marketing 402

In the spring, students use the fall course’s information and positioning strategy to develop a complete integrated marketing communications (IMC) campaign that includes tactical decisions. Additionally, the student team will prepare a formal written IMC plan book and then “pitches” its campaign to a panel of judges at a regional competition that includes groups from other Idaho universities as well as from universities in Montana, Oregon, and Washington.
