A team of five COBE finance students—Anthony Fox, Tyler Hill, Matthew Hineline, Rhett Mosqueda and Kieran Nolan—emerged victorious in the Idaho Regional of the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Institute Research Challenge. A Boise State team has won four of the last seven Idaho competitions.
“This competition provides unparalleled real-world application for our finance students, and I’m incredibly proud of the work this year’s team did,” said faculty coach Keith Harvey, Ph.D., who is a CFA charterholder. “The real world is much messier than the textbook, and it’s such a joy for me each year to work with a group of highly motivated students who are willing to tackle the ambiguity and go deeper.”
Harvey teamed with Nathan Oakley to mentor the students. Oakley is also a CFA and an investment adviser at Mountain Pacific Investment Advisers, Inc.
“Nathan brought his tremendous depth of industry experience to bear in helping the students polish their work and prepare for a tough Q&A session,” said Harvey.
The annual Challenge is a global competition that provides finance students with an immersive experience in financial analysis and valuation. The students analyze a public company and write an initiation of coverage report which includes a valuation and recommendation on the stock. The regional winners advance to the Americas regional competition to be held in New York City on April 20-21, with the global final held the following day.
