Letter from the Chair

Welcome to the Department of Civil Engineering at Boise State University!

Within our website, you will find information about our ABET accredited academic program, student engagement, and our faculty. Boise State has been ranked one of the 50 most innovative schools in the country and this dedication to innovation flows through our course content and how we teach.

Our modern undergraduate curriculum, while still grounded in the fundamentals, provides unique opportunities for students to obtain the breadth of knowledge to successfully enter the civil engineering profession. Our faculty provide research opportunities for undergraduate students who wish to pursue advanced degrees and we engage our freshman and sophomore students in civil engineering courses which leverage the uniqueness of Boise and the Treasure Valley. We also actively work to satisfy the needs of non-traditional, rural, first-generation, and second-degree seeking students.

We offer BS, MS, and M.Eng. degrees in civil engineering. We also offer an accelerated BS-MS program where students can complete both degrees in five years. We are aligned with joint PhD programs in computing, materials science and engineering, and geosciences. Our faculty members, who actively teach all of the civil engineering courses in our curriculum, have expertise in:

  • Environmental Engineering
  • Geotechnical Engineering
  • Materials Engineering
  • Structural Engineering
  • Transportation Engineering
  • Water Resources Engineering

Here is what you will not find on our website but must experience for yourself. We are an engaged community of students, staff, and faculty. We embrace servant leadership and encourage an inquisitive nature in our students. Our faculty acknowledge everyone’s perspective in addressing the needs of our communities. We believe a multifaceted approach to  learning both inside and outside of the the classroom to engage all of our students and because it is outside the classroom where civil engineers can do the most good. Lastly, our student clubs, staff, faculty, and industry partners are dedicated to serving our community and inspiring the next generation of engineers and scientists.

Come for a visit. See what makes the Department of Civil Engineering at Boise State University different. Experience how a leading university and a city filled with thoughtful infrastructure and adventure opportunities can support one another. Join the civil engineering family and make a difference in your community, country, and world!
