Dr. Nirmala Kandadai joined Boise State University as Assistant Professor in September 2019. She completed her PhD from University of Texas at Austin in 2012. Her PhD work investigated the interaction of high intensity laser with molecular gas clusters and the stability of the plasma generated. After her PhD, she worked for a short duration as a post doctoral fellow at University of Texas at Austin working on improving the contrast of a 1 PW laser system. After that she joined National Energetics, Austin Texas as a Laser Scientist. At National Energetics, she lead her team in designing and building high power ultra fast laser systems, which included successfully building the front end of a10 PW laser system for European Union’s Extreme Light Infrastructure Beamlines facility (ELI-Beamlines). At Boise state university, she joined as an Assistant Research faculty in 2016. She is the director of Fiber optics Lasers and Integrated photonics group (FLAIR). Her work involves creating optical fiber sensors in harsh environments. Currently she is working with Idaho National Lab in creating optical sensors that can survive in pile. She is also working with coherent optical fiber bundle for visualization sensors and working on in pile infrared thermography for crack detection. She is also working with Prof Jim Browning and Dr. Harish Subbaraman in optimizing and understanding Plasma Jet printing. In addition to that, she is part of Nanoscale Materials & Device Group, in Material Science and Engineering. Her role involves in using ultrafast laser spectroscopy to study coherent excitonic network generated by the precise arrangement of chromophore using DNA self assembly. In addition to that Dr. Kandadai’s area of interest includes, optical fiber sensors, novel optical material, Mid IR sensors, mid IR laser, fiber laser,ultrafast laser spectroscopy, laser ablation of thin films, optical imaging and laser matter interaction.
