Battery Energy Storage Systems: An Industrial Perspective

Join us for seminar on Wednesday, October 27! Dr. Ahmed Elasser is scheduled to present about battery energy storage systems from an industrial perspective. This presentation will be joint with the IEEE Boise Power and Energy Systems Society Chapter. Participate in person at the Micron Engineering Center, room 114 or join us on Zoom.

Abstract

Battery Energy Systems have recently been attracting a lot of attention as a result of significant improvements in battery technology, lower cost per KWh, and expansion of highly variable and intermittent renewable resources such as wind and solar. In addition to providing an overview of Energy Storage Technologies in general, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) will be addressed from a cell, module, string, power conversion, and grid level point of view. Front and Behind the Meter BESS applications will be discussed with a focus on utility scale applications. Key challenges and future opportunities for innovation in the BESS space will also be discussed. A comprehensive reference list will also be provided.

Speaker Bio

Ahmed Elasser received his MS & PhD degrees in Electric Power & Power Electronics in 1993 & 1996 respectively from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He is a Principal Systems Engineer at GE Research in the areas of Electric Power, Power Electronics, and Power Semiconductor Devices. He worked on Power Devices, Solar Energy, Power Conversion Systems, and is currently leading the Battery Energy Storage Systems Power Conversion. He published over 40 papers and has 37 issued patents.
