Shawn Shields is a junior in Boise State\u2019s Electrical Engineering program. He\u2019s an IEEE member and participates in Boise State\u2019s Aerospace Club. Shields is also currently working as an intern at Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories in R&D in the Distribution Controls and Sensors department.<\/p>\n

IEEE Power and Energy Society (PES) recently named Shields as a PES Scholar for the 2020-2021 academic year. Shields was chosen for his high-achieving academic performance and demonstrated commitment to the power and energy field. The Electrical and Computer Engineering Department is proud to have such a curious and committed student representing Boise State.<\/p>\n

Shields is a first-time PES Scholar recipient who is expected to graduate in June 2022 with a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and a Minor in Computer Science. After graduation, Shields plans on pursuing a career in renewable energy. He\u2019s particularly interested in smart grids and how renewable energies interface with power systems.<\/p>\n

The IEEE PES is a nonprofit organization of over 26,000 engineers and scientists worldwide. It is the world\u2019s largest forum for sharing technological developments in the electric power industry. The PES Scholarship Plus Initiative supports the most promising future engineers in power and energy. Since the program launched in 2011, 1,809 scholarships have been awarded to almost 1,061 students at more than 175 universities across the USA, Canada & Puerto Rico. This year, 118 electrical engineering students representing accredited universities in the US, Puerto Rico, and Canada were selected as PES scholars this year. Each will receive up to $3000 to help defray educational costs as they pursue their interest in power and energy systems.<\/p>\n
