New WRR paper on river reactivity

The HIP lab recently published a new research paper in Water Resources Research titled, “Quantifying Benthic Biolayer Contributions to Whole-Stream Reactivity by Unifying Surface and Subsurface Observations: Field Evidence and Theory”. The study explains why most reactions in streams occur in a very shallow region of the streambed called the benthic biolayer. To complete this work, we developed a process-based model that tracks parent and daughter compounds in the river and its sediments, which will inform future efforts to track pharmaceuticals and their degradation byproducts as they enter rirerways.

This project had contributions from former lab member Ryan Samolis as part of his HERC funded research project. Congratulations Ryan!
