Located in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, we are a new model for a School of Materials Science and Engineering. Based on a strong foundation of interdisciplinarity, radical collaboration, industrial support, and dynamic balance, our vision is to be a leader of inclusive excellence, empowering world-class students to solve global challenges of enduring significance through materials innovation.
The Micron School of Materials Science & Engineering was founded in the College of Engineering as the Department of Materials Science & Engineering in 2004 by Drs. Amy Moll and Bill Knowlton and immediately began enrolling Bachelors and Masters level students. After a period of exceptional growth, the interdisciplinary Ph.D. Program was established in 2012 with a generous gift of $12M from the Micron Foundation. In 2015, another $25M gift from the Micron Foundation established the department as a school and in 2020 the school will move into the new Micron Center for Materials Research.
