Single Crystal Ni-rich Cathodes for Advanced Li-ion Batteries:Synthesis, Scaleup and Validation

Abstract: High energy Ni-rich cathode will play a key role in advanced Li-ion batteries, but it suffers from moisture sensitivity, side reactions and gas generation. Single crystalline Ni-rich cathode has a great potential to address the challenges present in its polycrystalline counterpart by reducing phase boundaries and materials surfaces. However, synthesis of high-performance single crystalline Ni-rich cathode is very challenging, not mentioning a fundamental linkage between over potential, microstructure and electrochemical behaviors in single crystalline Ni- rich cathodes. This talk will explore cost-effective synthesis approaches for industry manufacturing and propose validation strategies for scaled Ni-rich single crystals.
Bio: Dr.Jie Xiao is a Battelle Fellow and leads Battery Materials & System Group atPacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). She is also a PNNL-University ofWashington distinguished faculty fellow. Dr. Xiao’s research spans fromfundamental research, battery materials scaleup and manufacturing to cellfabrication and engineering for vehicle electrification and grid energystorage. She has published more than 100 peer-reviewed journal papers and beennamed top 1% Clarivate Analytics Highly Cited Researcher since 2017. Dr.Xiao holdsseventeen patents in the area of energy storage area and seven of them havebeen licensed to industry. She is the recipient of a few awards such as USDepartment of Energy’s E. O. Lawrence Award, Battelle Distinguished Inventorand Fellow of The Electrochemical Society etc
