We encourage students to participate in activities beyond the classroom. Here are some of the student clubs and organizations that might be right for you.

We are the Boise State Aerospace Club. We are a club largely dedicated to hands-on aerospace related projects, ranging from RC aircraft builds to opportunities to participate in national aerospace design competitions. If you’re interested in hands on engineering and design, or if you’re interested in the aerospace field or industry, the Aerospace Club is for you!

Our current main project is Icarus, a solar-powered, fixed-wing drone based around the skywalker x-8. We are working on designing an avionics suite and propulsion systems, as well as a solar charging setup, for this plane. We will be installing avionics this semester hopefully, with a test flight planned for the middle of next semester.

Another project is the trainer plane, which is currently being reconditioned. We hope to complete this project in the next few weeks of October, after which we intend to allow all our members the opportunity to gain drone piloting skills using this aircraft.

The third project is a catapult to launch both aircraft. So far we have CAD designs and have 3D-printed a test carriage, and we hope to complete it as soon as the purchase request which we have filed is accepted.

The purpose of this organization is to provide students with the opportunity to work on a real-world, challenging engineering design project. The club’s existence will help them to gain the following skills: proficiently working as a team to create and implement new ideas, overcome design related challenges, and successfully manufacture a vehicle to be raced/tested in a national collegiate competition.

Broncos for a Better Tomorrow is a service-learning club whose mission is to use engineering based service projects to help better communities both locally and internationally. Recent projects include modifying electric toy cars to be used by children with limited mobility, and modifying inhalers to be more easily usable for people with disabilities. Join us for an opportunity to use your skills to help people and solve problems.

The Mechanical Engineering club is a group of students devoted to gaining hands-on experience in their respective fields of engineering. We strive to apply to what we’ve learned in the classroom to our organization and future club projects. Finally, we hope to develop strong mentor relationships to maintain involvement and continuation in our field of study.

Phi Sigma Rho is a sorority for women in engineering and technical science majors. We are a group of women who want to succeed academically but are also interested in the social aspects of a traditional sorority. In other words, its the best mix of school and sorority life for women in engineering and technical science majors. Eligible majors include: Chemistry, Civil Engineering. Computer Science, Construction Management, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Kinesiology with a Biomedical emphasis, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Physics

PSR is currently not accepting new members for the Fall 2020 semester, but will be recruiting for Spring 2021 soon!

Light The Night is a series of fundraising campaigns benefiting The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) funding of research to find blood cancer cures. They bring light to the darkness of cancer by working to ensure access to treatments for all blood cancer patients. They bring communities together to celebrate those who are fighting the disease and to honor those we have lost.

Tau Beta Pi was founded at Lehigh University in 1885 making it the second oldest honor society in the nation. Its continued efforts at creating a tight knit community for engineering students of distinguished scholarship and exemplary character for over 100 years makes it the oldest and most prestigious Engineering Honor Society in the nation. Tau Beta Pi is also the only Engineering Honor Society that represents all fields of the engineering profession.

Tau Beta Pi has created an environment in which engineering students can be acknowledged for their hard work and also allows students to form more connections with employers and luminaries in the area. Joining Tau Beta Pi means becoming part of an organization that is bigger than any one person or university.

With over 200 chapters, Tau Bates initiate into an active network of information and support. Boise State – Idaho Gamma Chapter The Boise State Tau Beta Pi Chapter was established on March 13th, 2010. With over 100 members, it is a growing group of the best Engineering Students in and from Boise State University. Being invited to join the Idaho Gamma Chapter as a junior means you are in the top 12.5% of your class of all engineering majors. Being invited as a senior means you are in the top 20%.

Beyond engineering, Tau Beta Pi is committed to community service and several volunteer opportunities, as well as social events, are held throughout the school year for the members and potential initiates.

Vertically Integrated Projects

Join a VIP team and earn academic credits for working alongside faculty pursuing ambitious, multi-semester projects. All students from any major and any academic year are invited to participate.

The goal of this project is to create innovative solutions to challenges that arise when designing, building, and testing autonomous robotic systems. The solutions created will be entered into competitions, such as the Intelligent Ground Vehicle Competition, and contests around the nation!

Micro-g NExT information and how to get involved

While offered as a VIP course, this group works on projects presented by NASA each year to support the space program. Students on the team will work to write a proposal, a test equipment data package, and a final report to NASA. You will also work on outreach to local schools and communities promoting NASA and STEM, empowering those who will follow in your footsteps.

The Microgravity teams currently meet in-person or on Zoom.

Micro-g Neutral Buoyancy Experiment Design Team (Micro-g NExT) challenges undergraduate students to design, build, and test a tool or device that addresses an authentic, current space exploration challenge. The overall experience includes hands-on engineering design, test operations, and public outreach. Test operations are conducted in the simulated microgravity environment of the NASA Johnson Space Center Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory (NBL). Teams will propose design and prototyping of a tool or simulant identified by NASA engineers as necessary in space exploration missions. Professional NBL divers will test the tools and students will direct the divers from the Test Conductor Room of the NBL facility. Micro-g NExT provides a unique opportunity to contribute to NASA’s missions. The 2021 Micro-g NExT challenges focus on aspects of the Artemis mission. More about NEXT here.

NASA SUITS (Spacesuit User Interface Technologies for Students) challenges students to design and create spacesuit information displays within augmented reality (AR) environments. As NASA pursues Artemis – landing American astronauts on the Moon by 2024, the agency will accelerate investing in surface architecture and technology development. For exploration, it is essential that crewmembers on spacewalks are equipped with the appropriate human-autonomy enabling technologies necessary for the elevated demands of lunar surface exploration and extreme terrestrial access. The SUITS 2021 Challenges target key aspects of the Artemis mission.
