I got my Bachelor’s degree in computer science from Fudan University, China. I worked as Software Engineer in Nepal where I was the leading backend engineer for a comprehensive government application.

I got my Master’s degree from Illinois State University with a perfect GPA. I worked as a research assistant and has one published work on a blockchain aided fair data trading system with provable privacy.

I am currently in work to publish a Journal extension to this paper. I hope to provide significant contributions to the larger world, especially in the field of cryptography and information security during my time at BSU.

Jeffrey Fairbanks is an accomplished Cybersecurity Software Engineer at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). Prior to his tenure at LLNL, he graduated early from Northwest Nazarene University Honors College with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, specializing in Data Science and Cybersecurity. Concurrently with his role at LLNL, Jeffrey is pursuing a Ph.D. at Boise State University, focusing on the intersection of Cybersecurity and Machine Learning. At LLNL, he has been instrumental in developing essential end-to-end tools and applications for significant initiatives by the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and the Department of Energy (DOE). I have more than ten years of industry experience working in software and systems engineering. In 2016, I was invited to join the Computer Science faculty, and since that time I have taught students at all levels of our undergraduate curriculum. Md Athikul Islam is a fifth-year Ph.D. candidate under the supervision of Dr. Edoardo Serra, with a research focus on Generative AI, Large Language Models (LLMs), Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), and Agentic AI. His work centers on enhancing the robustness and security of NLP systems, particularly in the context of LLMs.

Originally from Bangladesh, Athikul brings over seven years of industry experience as a Senior Software Engineer, primarily with a Netherlands-based tech company. His research contributions have been published in leading venues such as the ECML-PKDD conference, the ACM Transactions on Intelligent Systems and Technology (TIST) journal, and the KDD@MLoG-GenAI workshop.

In the summer of 2025, he completed a Ph.D. internship at Uber Technologies Inc. as a Ph.D. Software Engineer (ML) within the Search Relevance & Optimization Team, where he contributed to applied machine learning efforts in search systems.

I am driven by a desire to explore the interconnected seething systems of the universe and fascinated by the process of transforming data into information. I have worked as a biostatistician and programmer in clinical trials research for over 10 years with most of those years spent researching neurodegenerative diseases. I am interested in developing tools to assist in resolving issues inherent to clinical trials data and modeling. My main research interest is in modeling and predicting the placebo effect for different therapies and disease types. While my research will focus on neurodegenerative diseases, I am interested to see if the placebo effect is similar across a variety of diseases. I hope to use this information to create a program that will generate accurate, simulated placebo data for clinical trials that did not enroll a placebo group. I hope to expand this program to generate simulated data for active treatment groups based on the expected treatment effect of the investigational medicinal product.

I have previously developed a computational model to predict joint mechanics in the implanted knee, and my Ph.D. work is supported through the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program. I am currently working on developing a computational framework with the potential to transform how clinicians make patient-specific diagnosis and treatment decisions about osteoarthritis. Critical project milestones include:

• Expanding and incorporating existing automated image segmentation algorithms into a pipeline which will allow us to automate production of patient-specific finite element (FE) models of the arthritic knee using only magnetic resonance (MR) images as inputs
• Using the automatic model production pipeline to produce a training set of knee models, I will develop FE independent statistical models that can instantaneously predict output joint mechanics in the degrading knee joint to provide meaningful feedback in the clinical setting

I have worked as a junior meteorologist and radiosounding assistant at the Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology, and Environment Studies of Colombia (IDEAM). In my bachelor’s degree, I worked with simulation models for flooding using remote sensing products.

In my master’s degree, I have gained expertise in numerical modeling using MATLAB, Python, RStudio, and Google Earth Engine platform DEE. Moreover, I have experience in machine learning and deep learning for carbon and aboveground biomass estimation.
