When I came to BSU for my master’s I had a full assistantship and wanted to work on some ‘fun’ machine learning projects. After getting to know what was being offered, I chose NLP and it has been great since. My master’s thesis was on conversational grounding in chatbots implemented through incremental processing. It exposed me to aspects of computer science that I had not previously worked on – user studies, HCI, Psychology and the cognitive sciences. I became very interested in those fields and that is when two things happened simultaneously. First, the thought of getting a doctorate struck me and second, I heard about CAST – an NSF funded project that aims to build a Child Adaptive Search Tool that will prompt research synergies among fields (HCI, IR, and NLP) traditionally considered in isolation to yield a practical advancement in children’s search. It was well aligned with my interests so I promptly applied and got in. As I have always loved the idea of applying technology to help people in big ways, I spend most of my time doing what I love.
