Critical Minerals

Boise State University is home to a growing hub of academic and research work tied to geosciences, materials science and studies related to critical minerals.

Critical minerals at Boise State

Boise State’s Department of Geosciences trains students in geology, geophysics and hydrologic science, with faculty research spanning ore deposits, isotope geochronology and Earth systems processes relevant to mineral exploration. This work is anchored by the Dr. Kenneth M. Hollenbaugh Endowed Professorship in Economic Geology, held by Dorsey Wanless, who is building a research and educational program focused on critical minerals and economic geology.

Complementing this, the Micron School of Materials Science and Engineering advances the study of materials essential to processing and applying critical minerals in modern technology, positioning Boise State as a regional contributor to the nation’s efforts to secure a resilient critical minerals supply chain.
