Ellen Schafer is an Assistant Professor in the School of Public and Population Health. She holds a BA in Mathematics and BS in Health Education (K-12) from Ithaca College, MPH in Community Health Education from the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse, and PhD in Public Health (Community & Behavioral Health) from the University of Iowa.

Currently, she is working on two projects: (1) to characterize social support networks of new moms and the changes that have occurred in those networks due to COVID-19, and (2) to characterize the social support networks and emergency preparedness measures of caregivers who are relatives-as-parents in the age of COVID-19.

Ellen’s research objective is to understand the social context of health behaviors, particularly those of caregivers. She has authored and co-authored several papers and a book chapter on social networks, infant care, aging, and caregiving behavior across the life course, ranging from infant feeding behaviors to support needs of those caring for a family member with dementia.
